Agreements

The following list of group norms is suggested to lay the foundation for stimulating and safe conversations. This includes when using these cards for personal reflection.

  1. Respect and Valuing: Show respect for all participants and value the diverse perspectives and experiences they bring to the table.
  2. Active Listening: Practice active listening by giving your full attention to the speaker, without interrupting or making assumptions based on group differences.
  3. Open-Mindedness: Maintain an open mind and be willing to challenge your own assumptions and biases, recognizing that group experiences vary and there is no single “right” way.
  4. Curiosity and Learning: Cultivate a sense of curiosity about different groups and be willing to learn from others’ experiences, perspectives, and traditions.
  5. Empathy and Understanding: Strive to understand and empathize with the challenges and experiences faced by individuals from different groups, acknowledging that everyone has unique backgrounds and stories.
  6. Safe and Inclusive Space: Create a safe and inclusive space where all participants feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, ideas, and concerns without fear of judgment or discrimination.
  7. Awareness of Power Dynamics: Be mindful of power dynamics within the group and recognize that some participants may have more privilege or influence based on their group backgrounds. Encourage equal participation and ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and valued.
  8. Cultural Humility: Embrace cultural humility by acknowledging that you are always learning. Recognize that your understanding of other groups may be limited. Avoid assuming expertise and be open to correction or additional insights from those with different backgrounds.
  9. Constructive Feedback: Provide feedback in a constructive and respectful manner, focusing on behavior and ideas rather than personal characteristics or group backgrounds. Also, assume positive intent when interacting with others.
  10. Confidentiality and Privacy: Respect the confidentiality and privacy of participants, especially when sharing personal stories or experiences related to group differences.

These agreements are useful for one-to-one or group interactions, such as coaching, workshops, individual counseling, and meetings. Always invite participants to share what they would want in a safe space to discuss difficult topics and situations. As always, adapt these agreements to your style and toolkit to make them your own.
